In 2017, I had an opportunity to design a robot for child patients, working with one of the biggest hospitals in Korea, Seoul National University Hospital. I got inspiration from a line of an ancient song in Korea “月印千江之曲(the moon’s reflection stamped on a thousand of rivers and valleys)” as a key slogan for robot designing, which is a kind of experiment of combining between old literature and contemporary design together. As the song says, I wanted to give a moon to each patient’s room to console their broken heart. On the surface, there is a subtle trace of craft man’s hand just like a traditional Korea portray, Moon Jar, and its human skin like-texture would offer warm temperature as well.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT OF DESIGNING ROBOT?
FASHION? TREND? FUNCTION? EFFECT? FANCY? PRICE? DURABILITY? DATA-BASE?
FASHION? TREND? FUNCTION? EFFECT? FANCY? PRICE? DURABILITY? DATA-BASE?
NO
RATHER, WARMTH & THE WAY OF COMMUNICATION
First of all, When I designed the mun, I strongly believed that the most fundamental and important thing of robot is not fashion, trend, effect, fancy, price, durability, and database. Rather, I insist that human warmth and communication.
That was the reason why I inspired by an ancient poem from a king of Korea, who designed the Korean language as a similar purpose in the Cho-Sun dynasty. Moreover, I combined with ancient ceramic building technics regarding to a Moon-jar process. With the help of the process, I achieved more sophisticated touches form the robot's(mun) surface.
Also, the branding process of the mun was based on Oriental painting brush techniques.
